Married to the Marquess Arrangements Book 2 edition by Rebecca Connolly Romance eBooks

There is an awful lot to like in 90% of this book. I liked the main characters and the core plot. The secondary characters are useful as they serve to provide insight into the characters of Derek and Kate. The author takes her time in developing the relationship between Derek and Kate and did it without taking them to the bedroom which is unusual these days. Finally, the vitriolic dialog between Derek and Kate in the beginning is so believable that it made me on uncomfortable. I felt like an intruder on a very bitter encounter between two strangers joined by marriage.

Kate and Derek were married very young after a childhood betrothal. They don't like one another and as the story opens 5 years into their marriage they have neither consummated their marriage nor have they lived together. A sudden event brings them together and they get on like oil and water. This is what gives rise to that uncomfortable dialog I mentioned earlier. However, as the story progresses there are some beautifully written scenes as they move past their early notions of one another and finally get to see each other in a different light. I believe these scenes, of which there are many, show excellent talent from this writer.

That's the good news. I did feel that there were some things missing in this story and a secondary plot element that bordered on irrational. I would like to have known more of Derek's and Kate's backstory. Why did her mother so dislike Derek? Why did Kate so dislike him? What happened after their wedding to make him take off and be a nonentity for 5 years? What was Kate's relationship with Derek's parents during that 5 years?

The irrational element is Derek's parents, especially his father. I didn't understand his demands that David, Derek's brother marry and settle down when Derek, who IS married was allowed to galavant around and leave the majority of estate management to his wife. Papa has allowed Derek to do this for 5 years and then suddenly demands, in the somewhat irrational last 10% of the story, that Derek and Kate produce an heir. Of course this served to throw a wrench in the developing, fragile relationship between Derek and Kate. While every good story needs complicating circumstances, this plot element just felt very contrived.

Bottom line: Apart from the negative things mentioned above, I liked this story. It is reasonably well written with some truly lovely, romantic scenes and I found myself rooting for the H/h. It makes for a pleasant afternoon or two.

Married to the Marquess Arrangements Book 2 edition by Rebecca Connolly Romance eBooks Reviews

I recommend reading the 1st book as those characters play a roll in book 2, which made more sense had I not known them. The sparring between the Derek and Katherine was emotional, sometimes funny, or heartbreaking. I'll read more from this author.
I like the book for the most part. But I wasn't thrilled with the ending. I felt like the fire was just inserted to add more drama. Derek was already on his way to declare his love. I would've preferred that- Declaring it because he worked it out on his own.

I was also confused that he left Nathan and Colin, basically running the entire way to his home, which was faster than getting a ride. Yet when he arrives and finds his home on fire, and is distraught that his wife is in there, it's those same friends that keep him from going inside. How did that happen? Maybe I missed something.
Once I started to read it was everything I could do, unless I literally had to stop. That's how good it was.
It was moving in all the areas that you knew it to be, but of course there were other surprising areas to. I loved it through it all. I'm looking forward to anymore books that are moving, loving, adventure looking, and great story line that are by Rebecca!
Thanks for this one I was crying with the characters for sure!
The synopsis of this book sounded great, but it was pretty boring. I lost interest about 1/2 way through and stopped reading it because I kept waiting for it to get exciting but it never did and I found that I really didn't care what happened (although it was very predictable). I did end up finishing it one night when I couldn't sleep. This book is not horrible, but I will definitely not be reading the next book in the series. It just felt really basic.
This was a great take on a previously seen theme. I very much enjoyed seeing the hero and heroine grow to like, and then love, each other as they made the effort to really know each other and build a friendship. It was nice to see it done without love triangles and jealousy and overly contrived situations, which are often employed in this kind of story. I also enjoy the cast of characters that the author had obviously set-up as future protagonists,as well as other background characters that I would love to know more about. I will certainly continue to read these books as they are available.

At one point I thought I would be giving this book five stars, but I simply could not after encountering some of my pet-peeves that occur often in this genre.
1. A peer of the realm cannot will his title (and likely, much of his fortune and property, which would be entailed along with the title) to whichever of his sons he wishes. Period. It does not matter how angry the peer is with his first born son. The title still goes to him. Any special exceptions to change the line of a title would involve such difficult proceedings that it was virtually impossible, hence many titles have died out over the years.
2. It was a little unclear to me if Nigel was already in possession of his title, or waiting on inheriting it, but assuming he already held it, the author clearly does not understand the difference between a "barony" and a "baronetcy". A baron is referred to as "Lord --------", and a baronet as "Sir Firstname". Nigel is called Sir Nigel, therefore he is either a baronet or had been knighted (which sounds unlikely). The son of a baron has no title so even if he is waiting on inheriting the barony, it is still incorrect for him to be addressed as Sir Nigel.
3. Contrary to popular regency genre fiction, lack of consummation was not really a magic ticket to obtain an annulment.
4. Throughout the book there are subtle examples of modern speech that would have been totally out of place at the time. Without looking back for an exact quote, an example would be something like, "You can wait in the drawing room." That is how someone might phrase it now, but at the time of the book, it would have been more likely stated something like, "You may wait in the drawing room." It probably seems nit picky, but there were a number of examples of modern speech, and it distracted me from the story.
