Iron Man Vol 2 The Secret Origin of Tony Stark Kieron Gillen Greg Land Dale Eaglesham Books
I've read a ton of review on this Volume and I see a majority of people disliking it. I believe that the story starts off a bit slow and has you really thinking Gillen is completely ruining Tony Stark as a character. I promise you read this volume and the next and you will be totally blown away. This is only Part one of two and this volume sets up a majority of the story in Volume 3. I highly recommend that if you are a fan of the Iron Man series or Gillen to read this comic.Only down side is the art work could be a little finer and not as clunky. Otherwise I would have given a five.

Iron Man Vol 2 The Secret Origin of Tony Stark Kieron Gillen Greg Land Dale Eaglesham Books Reviews
Good.
It's awesome best comic ever! Don't hesitate getting it worth every penny E.P.I. C and the cover looks kinda funny!
iron man in space as we find him fighting for his life against an alien race that worships the phoenix as a god and condemns him to death by combat and the mysterious recorder who offfers to help him not only save himself but also reveals the truth surrounding his genius and birth
With a new Iron Man armour, a new AI - PEPPER - and a new sense of dissatisfaction following the realisation of mankind's potential and how far they are from achieving it, Tony Stark has left Earth behind and headed out into the cosmos. In this book, Tony faces an alien court of justice following the death of the Phoenix Force, and then learns some shocking truths about his parentage.
Kieron Gillen's first Iron Man book was very tedious as each issue showed Tony trying out a new armour. This episodic structure led to a very disjointed reading experience. And then there was Greg Land's artwork... Land might be the worst artist working at Marvel today. He made Tony look Mongolian for goodness sake! He's still here though.
The second book is less choppy but unfortunately no better. The first story arc - Godkiller (in no way related to the Jason Aaron Thor/ God Butcher storyline, but what is it about killing gods at Marvel?!) - has a distinctly Star Wars flavour to it. Tony's first in an alien bar hitting on an alien princess, then gets arrested for killing the Phoenix (see Avengers Vs X-Men - or don't, it was terrible! And it wasn't even Tony who did the deed, it was Scarlet Witch and Hope!). He has to fight a series of alien gladiators in an extended Luke Skywalker/Rancor sequence that isn't in any way as exciting as the Return of the Jedi scene. And then there's Greg Land's art, which hasn't improved either.
The second story arc is more promising, if only for Dale Eaglesham taking over the art. Tony is hot on the trail of evil genocidal robot 451 who reveals to him a deal he made years ago with his dad, Howard Stark. 451 is actually a pretty good villain who doesn't actually follow the usual bad guy features of menacing appearance and constant evil rhetoric. He kills literally hundreds of thousands yet seems somewhat sympathetic - an amazing feat from Gillen.
The story itself, the first part of The Secret Origin of Tony Stark? Not so good. It's basically Ocean's 11 but way more rushed and barely interesting. Back in the 60s, Howard Stark assembles a team to rip off a Vegas casino run by Greys (the quintessential alien template). Another movie reference stuck out in the character of the alien Rollo, who betrays his fellow Greys and looks/acts/talks just like Fredo in The Godfather!
So that's the second volume of Gillen's Iron Man derivative and uninspired. He riffed on a number of popular movie plots and characters that didn't work well here and fashioned an altogether forgettable and boring book. Check out Gillen's sublime Young Avengers to see why this dude keeps getting work.
There may be spoilers ahead...
Collecting issues 6 to 11 of the new, revamped Iron Man series under the Marvel NOW! revolution, this volume is split into 2 parts. The first 3 issues is a story called Godkiller, and is an aftermath to the Avengers versus X-Men event from 2012. The second half of the volume is the first part of an epic story that will take up all of volume 3 as well, entitled The Secret Origin of Tony Stark.
Godkiller is linked to Secret Origin, so they are not standalone stories. At the end of volume 1, Iron Man left Planet Earth and headed out into the stars to basically explore and have new adventures and "boldly go...etc". Volume 2 kicks off with him having one such adventure where we see him in the midst of a dogfight against alien space pirates and coming to the aid of an alien race called the Voldi.
The Voldi are hugely grateful for his intervention and we next see him being amorous with a purple skinned alien princess, and all is going well at first base until the Voldi discover that Iron Man was responsible for the destruction of the Phoenix Force (see Avengers Versus X-Men by Brian Michael Bendis (2012), who the race just happen to worship as their God. Oops.
So Tony is on trial for the crime of deicide. Step forward Recorder 451, an alien robot of unknown origin who, for as yet unknown reasons, wishes to assist Tony in gaining his freedom.
After some gladitorial trial by combat and the appearance of Death's Head - a 30 foot tall robot bounty hunter, plus some nasty genocidal destruction of the Voldi, we move on to the start of the epic Secret Origin storyline.
In this story, Tony is now held captive by Recorder 451, and he begins to show him an old video reel, recorded by Tony's father Howard, and all of a sudden, everything that Tony know's about his past and heritage has all been a lie. Why? Because the recording shows Howard Stark and Recorder 451 working together, and we learn that 451 intervenes during Tony's time in his mother's womb, manipulating his genes in order for him to be the greatest scientist/engineer that ever lived.
Most of this part of the story is told in flashback mode, as Howard Stark learns of a way of saving his dying, unborn child. Heading to Las Vegas with a band of questionable merry men, he finds a gang of alien gangsters, hiding in disguise but in plain sight who have Recorder 451 captive. Rescuing 451, Howard learns that 451 can save his child, and reveals that Tony is destined for greatness, but only 451's intervention can achieve this.
So, we learn that Tony Stark is not a naturally gifted individual and a chip off the old block - he has actually been genetically engineered to be that way. This is quite a revelation and as promised by writer Kieron Gillen in his narrative at the start, it has kind of shook the foundations of the Iron Man mythology.
But I like it. It changes the way I think about him now. Reed Richards, Henry Pym, Hank McCoy - all brilliant and leading superhero scientists in their own right, but are now seemingly overshadowed by Tony Stark, who has a destiny to save the Earth which is being watched, we learn from 451, by cosmic beings. This possibly connects to this year's Marvel event INFINITY.
Kieron Gillen is just about at the top of his game at the moment. I devotingly loved his work on Journey Into Mystery, and this may be evident in my reviews of that title here on , which I've mostly given five stars.
I'm trying to give his Iron Man books 5 stars, but I just can't. Whilst his first 2 volumes have been really good, they are not astoundingly great when I compare them to his awesome Journey Into Mystery stories. I would probably give them 4.5 stars. The artists are decent enough, and in this volume the pencil duties are shared between Greg Land and Dale Eaglesham. Both are high quality artists, and the colouring is superb as well.
I should probably give another quarter mark for bringing Death's Head into the story. I remember him from the late 80s but I could not recall from what publication. After a quick type into my trusty search engine, I found that he was in Transformers comics, which I've never read, and also made the odd appearance in Dr Who comics, which I probably did read for a short while in my mid to late teens. Gillen brought him back recently in S.W.O.R.D. but now he's in Iron Man. Bravo I say, and I hope there's more to come from this strange but brilliant bounty hunter.
This 4.75 rated volume ends on a cliffhanger, so there's more to come from The Secret Origin of Tony Stark. As Death's Head might say, "To be continued, yes?"
The writing is fantastic, the pacing is great. I'm not in love with the art, but that's a taste thing, it's good. Definitely worth your while.
I've read a ton of review on this Volume and I see a majority of people disliking it.
