The Way Inn starts off very strong--it is a sharply told satire focusing on the absurdities of business travel and conferences. Very funny, very spot on. Along the way, however, the narrative veers off into some sort of Matrix-y tale that does not make a whole lot of sense. I still enjoyed reading this novel, but I just wish Wiles had managed to develop the storyline following the business travel satire without the unrealistic developments later on in the novel.

The Way Inn A Novel is a very odd book, and one that I wanted to like more than I did. Neil Double, the primary character, is a conference surrogate, meaning he attends trade conferences on behalf of other people. Why is such a thing even necessary? Aren't trade shows full of entertainment, fun, good food, and an escape from the day to day grind? Well, perhaps for some people, conferences are enjoyable, but for many other people, a conference involves a lot of time and money for not much return. A conference surrogate can attend on behalf of many people, attending key sessions and finding those one or two gems that make a conference worthwhile, so a win-win for both parties.

Neil Double has invested all of his limited assets into the surrogacy company, but more importantly, is addicted to the life of travel, hotels, and fleeting relationships. The author's descriptions of mid-tier hotels immediately calls to mind every Marriott Courtyard or Hilton Garden Inn you've ever stayed at. Conference registration, badges, cheap bags, buses to the exhibition hall are all captured perfectly, and the reader can almost smell the plastic and chemicals.

Then, the book drops into a surreal adventure of a mysterious woman and hotels as living entities. These portions of the book were long, verbose, and just dragged on with no real point. Perhaps the intent was to mess with your mind a bit, and make some deep, reflective statement, but for it was a loss for me and I skimmed to the end.
Having read Care of Wooden Floors and, frankly, not having been impressed, I wavered about reading this. However, the plot seemed like something more suited to my tastes, so I grabbed it. And, frankly, there were times when I wanted to pitch it aside and read more in the other books I had started. The word that comes to mind is "tedious". Wiles seemed dedicated to taking a long path between two points, and choosing one that had absolutely no scenery.

However, frankly, something kept me reading, though I took many more breaks than I normally would with a book of this length. Then, after a break spent reading something else, I would give it another run for ten to twenty pages. In that fashion, I made it to the end of The Way Inn. The trip through the book and the hotel was fascinating, even with its tedium.

The title itself, of course, suggests more than one meaning and hints at something hidden at the inn(s), The Way Inn being a chain of hotels. While most events were unfolding, there was always something lingering over the shoulders of the characters and reader alike. And, frankly, I'm sure it was that added presence that kept me coming back to the inn, and our main character, Neil Double.

Neil, being nondescript himself, blends into the one-size-fits-all style of chain hotels. And, The Way Inn is the poster child of such. In the midst of trying to solve some real world problems he faced, he also ran into some not quite so real world problems. At this point the book changes from going nowhere to going places that may have no "where".

This is a pick your label book fantasy, supernatural, you ain't gonna believe this, whatever. The Way Inn is an interesting look at the hotel as something more than a place to sleep and change clothes.
I have a high tolerance for mystery and twisty plots and creepy metaphors nut this was all too much, I'm afraid.

Loved this book! Just his second novel, I swear I will read everything Will Wiles writes from now on...I kept thinking it seemed like something the late David Foster Wallace would have written, maybe with a touch of Stephen King or Dean Koontz toward the end. It's a departure from his first novel, Care of Wooden Floors, but I enjoyed it just as much. The bio on the back of the book (I actually read the real book, a hard copy) says his day job is an architecture and design journalist. I have to say that I don't think I want to visit any buildings he may have designed! BTW, this is the first review I've ever written (so please forgive the lack of detail), and I read over 200 books last year.
