Don Carver is a bit of a loser. A divorced accountant for a pharmaceutical company, he lives in a studio apartment, has no luck with women and is sitting on the toilet when the zombapocalypse comes knocking on his stall door. Although Don isn't the typical hero, he picks up a few stragglers and makes his way to his ex-wife's house to pick up his son and escape the city.

There are some surreal and funny moments in this book - the characters, particularly Don, are realistic and don't have the clichéd `hero' tag. As the story progresses, more of Don's past is revealed, giving more insight into the character, and other characters are developed into atypical zombie-survivor types and I wanted all of them (perhaps with the exception of Don's crazy-ex) to make it all the way through to the end. The cause of the zombie virus is explained in good detail, not overwhelmingly science-y but enough to give credibility to the story.

Don of the Living Dead did lose some momentum in the middle of the book and felt a little like going through the motions rather than nail-biting action, but there were some memorable moments that kept me reading just to see how this would all turn out. And it turned out to be a proper ending - hurrah!

There are some spelling/grammatical errors in this book, not enough to make it unreadable but a good editorial or proofreading eye could make this into an excellent book. Mr DeCoteau has a definite future in zombie/horror writing with some unique ideas and a gutsy writing style.

Don of the Living Dead edition by Robert DeCoteau Monique Happy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I have mixed feeling about this book. While I thought the overall storyline was good and I did enjoy it, I found the grammar and spelling errors off-putting and I became more intensely annoyed by the main character, Don, as the story grew. My main problem with Don, was that while he tried to be the hero of the book, in reality he's the guy who barely lifts a finger yet takes all the credit. To compound the issue, despite him "wiping away a couple of tears" here and there, he came off as essentially a selfish a**, sending his friends into danger before him, blaming others for causing their deaths when he himself triggered the event. Yes, you could potentially look at him as the orchestrator that brings things together, but in my eyes the real heroes are the Billys, Gristles and Lindseys of the world, not the Dons. A great leader has usually made their own sacrifices and I saw none of that in Don. Maybe this was the author's purpose, the end was definitely construed in such a way as to give him some redemption, but again, had it not been for other characters in the book, he would not have been there in the first place to redeem himself. I found myself comparing Don to Michael Talbot (Zombie Fallout) and wishing he could have been more like him, still an a**, but one I could at least respect.

The author has already addressed the grammar/spelling issues here which is great, and as I said I definitely enjoyed the book - I guess I maybe just missed something with Don. Regardless of this, I highly recommend giving this a go if you're a zombie fan, and have downloaded the author's short stories based on this novel as well as New Days The First Son, all of which I'm enjoying so far.
This book frames the world that the Primrose Court stories also take place within.

Don Carver is not your typical hero. He doesn't want to be a hero. He's not cut out for heroism. Heroism is, however, thrust upon him -- and it starts when he's in the john. And there you have the writer's slightly twisted sense of humour on display right from the start. There are laugh-out-loud moments in this book. There are heart-stopping moments. There are choke-up moments. The full range of emotions. You don't always find that in horror novels.

There are losses in this world. Don loses people that he didn't even know he'd miss as well as people he's quickly bonded with in the aftermath of the accident that brings on the zombie apocalypse.

Zombies. Little kids. A bit of romance. Humour. An unlikely hero. A band of determined survivors. A basset hound and his trucker. What's not to love?

There are some grammatical and punctuation errors. Overlook them and get lost in this story.
